“Nga by the docks” from TALES FROM THE BOAT
“Nga by the docks.” from TALES FROM THE BOAT. Illustrations I did of Nga, the heroine from the upcoming YA Novel TALES FROM THE BOAT. Nga is a young Vietnamese/Chinese girl, from a small fishing village just north of Saigon. A “Miracle Baby” who against all odds, was born prematurely under a sign of change; thus assuring she’d remain forever small. She is number 11 in line of her parent’s close knit brood of 13 children; spared from a sudden mudslide that erased half her village by a giant bat. She was favored by many desired by some but loved by all. Her story would be watched over by angels and demons alike and shared by everyone to come after her. Her story begins at the docks, but is forever changed when she when she and her family are forced to flee the increasingly dangerous and unstable country in 1978 on an over crowded barely seaworthy fishing boat. It is this long journey west that holds the key to uniting two worlds but it is Nga’s amazing heart that must pay the price to do so.
