W is for War Heads, next in the 90sNibbles series! I wasn’t a big sour candy kid, so I don’t know if I’ve ever tried War Heads. A travesty, I know! I’ve heard stories of kids proving their toughness with War Heads and Cry Babies. Maybe if I was socialized as a man, I would have eaten lots of these candies while trying to prove myself in these tough guy competitions. I’ll file that under the “we’ll-never-know” category. Or maybe I will have to go out and do research. When I leave the house again, that is.

Warheads, invented in 1975 in Taiwan, are named after the part of the rocket that holds the explosives. The name is a pretty accurate description of what your mouth feels like as you eat it (or so I've heard). It is nearly impossible for someone to eat the candies without making a sour face, which the logo illustrates perfectly. Each piece of candy is coated in a layer of malic acid, citric acid, and ascorbic acid. Malic acid is the same found in green apples, giving them their sour kick. Americans either love the challenge or the flavor. War Heads have been souring faces all across America and Australia since they came over in 1993.
