V is for Viennetta, next in the 90sNibbles series! Having a slice of Viennetta, like going to Disney, is something I always wanted as a kid and never got to experience. Because they advertised it as such a fancy dessert, I guess my kid brain said, “oh, that’s too classy for us!” I didn’t even try to ask my parents for it. Like the Hershey’s Symphony bar and Ferrero Rocher chocolates, Viennetta was in the foods for billionaires category.

I would drool watching those enticing commercials accompanied by sexy sax-filled soundtracks. The ultimate in hand-model talent went into those ads, gesturing through an entire dramatic story. From the server hands, placing the slices in a fancy crystal coupe glass to the woman’s hands saying “Oh, no, I couldn’t possibly!” and immediately giving in to her temptation. And the fidgety hands around the table, wondering who would get the last slice, the suspense was palpable! They sure did make this dessert look irresistible!

Viennetta, a beautiful cake made of ice cream and alternated chocolate layers, was developed in 1981 by Kevin Hillman, a product development manager at Wall’s Ice Cream. After its success, the decadent dessert came to America and Canada in the 90s under the Breyers name. Tugging at nostalgic heartstrings everywhere, Viennetta has made a solid comeback to grocery shelves this year. I have another chance to fulfill my billionaire childhood dreams!
