Dayton Web Developers Logo Proposal

Since I am part of the Dayton Web Developers meetup, I wanted to pitch in and create a logo for the group. Truth be told, I am not a developer, I'm a designer... I just happen to know my way around HTML, CSS and Sass pretty well :]

Rationale

1. The colors are based on Cobalt2, one of the most popular themes for Sublime Text (a text editor).

2. The typeface used in the logo is Franklin Gothic, designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1903. This is the same year the Wright Brothers made their first flight. Aviation was born in Dayton, OH which is where Orville Wright was born.

3. I used the Condensed style of Frankling Gothic to represent one of the best practices of web development: “compress”/“minimize” everything for production.

4. The typeface used for the curly brackets “{}” is 'Menlo for Powerline', which is part of the family of typefaces used in the Cobalt2 theme for Sublime Text.

5. To give some depth to the logo, I decided to use both strong + small and subtle + wide drop shadows. I then took the long shadow on the curly brackets into the yellow outline.

6. The colors scheme is based on the Cobalt2 theme as well.
