Task

My assignment was to develop a strong visual aesthetic for Moon, a start-up NFT marketplace.

Process

The journey to craft Moon's visual identity began with gathering inspiration and creating two unique moodboards. I explored paths based on each moodboard and then chose one concept to pursue and finalize. I scaled and refined my design on multiple screens, built a UI library, and made a working prototype.

Moodboards

Two contrasting aesthetics drew my attention as I gathered inspiration:

The "Copper Frontier" board showcases a subtle tone that evokes ideas of the earth, the galaxy, mystery, fluidity, and horizons.

The "Bright Eye Candy" board feels more buoyant with it's bold, playful colors and fresh, energetic graphics.

Visual Exploration

Ultimately, I chose to pursue the "Copper Frontier" aesthetic, since I gravitated towards the sophistication and earthy colors of those designs. The second design became my favorite because of the combination of purple and orange, the added depth due to the dark background, and the museum-esque feel.

Locking and Scaling

I wanted to preserve the art museum aesthetic as I scaled my design across five different screens. Using a serif typeface for headings and keeping the image grids interesting, yet orderly were two key aspects of that.

The teal color pops contrasted with the dark purple background helped to keep the aesthetic fresh, combining the art gallery concept with the space and exploration concept.

Finding a sans serif typeface for the body copy was challenging. After working with a few choices, I decided on Quattrocento Sans. It seemed to work well with the more traditional feel of Prociono (my serif typeface).
