character in-motion

I created this piece as a form and movement study with a focus on dynamic silhouette and secondary motion in fabric. I wanted to play with shading, color, and line-work to see the interaction between solidity and fluidity. One thing I find fascinating is how our brains "fill in the details"; in this study, I left the lines on the left figure while removing them on the right. While the left figure has a more identifiable form, the sketch lines "hold" the physical form to a stricter posture, while also implying action. However, the figure on the right has a looser, breezier feel due to the water color wash effect of the brushes and lack of boundary lines. Our brains are left to fill in details of this form - because we are given an open invitation to interpretation, we can receive an implied idea of what our subject looked like before or after this pose, if the figure was actually moving. This piece was created in procreate and photoshop.
