Designing a Safe, Diverse News Environment with NEWSOPP
Exposure to harmful or disturbing news can lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression and can even contribute to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder.
One of the main challenges of this project is finding a way to reduce the spread of misinformation and fake news, which can contribute to the formation of echo chambers and reinforce people's existing beliefs and biases. This project aims to create a news-consumption environment free from harassment, trolling, and other harmful behavior and provides a balanced and diverse range of perspectives and sources.
My proposal is Newsopp, an app that offers personalized daily news summaries based on the user's location and interests.
The summaries would include a variety of perspectives and sources and would be updated throughout the day to ensure that the information is always timely and relevant. Each summary would consist of articles, videos, and other media from various sources, including mainstream news outlets, independent journalists, and social media influencers.
The goal would be to provide a balanced and diverse range of perspectives on each topic to help users see multiple sides of the story and avoid being trapped in echo chambers. In developing this proposal, I conducted user research to understand people's news-consumption habits and identify their pain points and needs.
