How To Give Good Design Feedback

How To Give Good Design Feedback - and build trust with your team.

Design is a collaborative process and teaching all the team players how to give feedback can be a true turning point. Here are our favorite five.

  • No personal preferences. Always use the strategy that was set at the beginning of the project (goals, ambition,…) to articulate your thoughts or challenge the ideas. We are designing something for your customers/clients not for you.

  • Be specific. Use examples, metaphors, doodles to make it easier for everyone to identify what you see.

  • Stay curious and ask questions if some choices are not clear. Design is a collaborative process.

  • Nourish the feedbacks with your expertise : if you are apart of a marketing team, explain why the proposals work or don’t work from a marketing point of view.

  • Be kind, generous and respectful. There is a high possibility that what you see is the result of some hard thinking. Never assume things were made because they just look great. Trust the experts you hired. It doesn’t mean you have to agree on everything, quite the opposite, but being kind can go a long way in a collaboration and build trust with all the skate-holders involved.
