Song of Songs

I’m going to try something new.

Like most designers, I snack on doodling and explore lettering and letterform illustrations. In an effort to challenge myself I started to focus on refining my type skills, but with an upped ante. I’m not working with Latin letter forms that are easy to reference for “inspiration,” I’m using Hebrew type instead.

Hebrew letters don’t lend themselves to the connections and hooks that are commonplace in Latin letter designs. Flourishes are more difficult to integrate, and the rigid shapes of Hebrew type will challenge me a heck of a lot more.

The first few illustrations are quotes from The Song of Songs, שיר השירים in Hebrew. This first one is just the title.
