How to Build a Mascot
Alexa queue our 80's makeover montage playlist - our mascot has had a makeover. Meet the PostHog mascot- a plump and multi talented hedgehog, who over the past 2 years has gone through a few changes.
When creating a mascot I would implore anyone to use a template, this ensures consistency with the shape and size of the mascot, learn from my mistakes- freehand drawing him every time does not work out well.
I would also suggest creating a Design System for creating mascots. Having a set brush stroke size and a locked colour palette will ensure your branding stays consistent throughout your brand. Below is mine!
It's important to keep on iterating even when you feel that you have reached an end point. For example I thought I had nailed the design of our mascot in the left image below. But when returning to it after some time I realised that there were a few problems arising with the design. The colour was too dark, the lines were too thin and the texture was not sitting right on the website. Evolution is inevitable so embrace it.
