Controversial Japan Cover Art
Controversial Japan Cover Art and Merchandise Design 2020
Controversial Japan is an up-and-coming podcast that unpacks controversial opinions about Japan:
“Japan is a prime example of collectivist culture while western countries put emphasis on the individual - such polar opposite mindsets. Misunderstandings and confusions are bound to happen when these two perspectives collide. Every episode we unpack one controversial opinion about the Japanese mindset, culture, and custom through stories and interviews. Join host Kaho Koda as she dives into her own culture and attempts to make sense of the disconnect between the Japanese and Western point of view.”
My goal with this design was to develop a consistent image and mood for the podcast and merchandise without delving into unfortunate stereotypes that are associated with Japan and Japanese people and culture.
Prototypes
The tone of the podcast is generally serious but with hints of comedic relief, so all parts of the podcast had to reflect those ideas. This podcast was produced by Human Burrito Production, designed by myself and my co-artists — Junan (sound designer) and Mikara (musician), as well as written and hosted by Kaho Koda.
