About the client

Rough Cut Creations is a woodworking studio making high quality products in Frederick, MD. The goal was to create an identity that captures the essence of RCC's unique style and attention to detail.

Inspiration

The work done by Rough Cut Creations is built on expert craftsmanship with an attention to even the smallest details – including embellishments such as carefully crafted bowtie joints and dovetails. We set out to capture this iconic aspect of RCC's work in logo form.

Early explorations

Early explorations focused on blending wood-working imagery such as saw blades and organic shapes that you'll find in the wood-working studio. We tried a variety of styles from modern, clean lines, to bumpy imperfect circles (like the cross-section of a tree).

Final logo

We landed on a final logo that stayed true to the initial inspiration of the bowtie joint seen in many finished RCC pieces. The shape of a dovetail joint creates the counter-forms of each letter in RCC and overall the logo feels sturdy, but clean and somewhat modern much like RCC's work.
