For our final assignment, we could create anything, but it had to meet certain rules and conditions for us to do so. The first task was to “use our voice to express how we feel about the world we are living in”; second, was to use a masking technique in our piece. Before starting the assignment, I had to answer some questions about the state of the world and technology. I chose to represent the views on the world in a tunnel/portal to the future. My piece is a person standing on a ledge staring off into the distance at the unknown.

By answering some of the following questions such as: “Does technology promise a better future?”, “Is the world a better place ecologically now that we are “saved by technology?””, and “Is the virtual space better than real space […]?”. Technology does not promise ‘us’ anything, it gives us the opportunity for a better future and it is up to the user to decide what to with that technology. In my opinion, technology is a gift and danger to humans and the world. Technology is only beneficial depending on the intention of its use. So, for a person who is living in the top 1% of wealth, it may be beneficial to be living in the world as it is; but for someone living in the third world country, technology may only further the gap in wealth and poverty.

When creating this piece, I had only one intention in mind. It was to show that the unknown is something beautiful and something we can look forward to. This piece expresses my thoughts on the current world. I am standing on a ledge that represents the present time and off looking into the bright abyss, is my hope in the future. The darkness that surrounds me is also the present that represents the corruption and the wrongs us humans have committed to each other as well as the world; wrongs such as social injustice, inequality, and racism. Although we may be surrounded by the darkness that seems to be overwhelming, the one thing we can do is hope for change in the future and change our actions.
