E-book that feels good
I read a lot of paper and e-books, but the last ones usually look so ugly that I just cannot enjoy reading.
Recently I was reading The Forest Song — a play written by one of the most famous Ukrainian poets Lesia Ukrainka. The Forest song is a poetic play. It is basically rhymed dialogs with a short intro to the scene at the begging of each chapter.
The e-book looked awful so I decided to try to fix it.
Process
I always start with a quick sketch no matter how simple a project is. It helps to free your mind and look at the initial idea from different angles.
Typography
It is vital to design text in a way that conveys authors idea: you should easily understand where is the beginning or the end of each verse; line breaks must be in the right place to keep the right reading rhythm.
I also designed author's and book's pages to have a more complete flow as well as to play with typography and images.
And finally I quickly assembled everything in Play using standard components. Just an incredible tool I cannot get enough of.
