Booking system for Tattoo Studio

About the Client

Kink Kang Tattoo is a French tattoo studio based in Lyon. The studio is artist-owned and operated by providing unique and custom work whether it’s a small spontaneous tattoo or a large-scale bodywork in a cool, underground atmosphere.

The problem

Kink Kang Tattoo reached out to me to make a website for the studio to showcase the artists’ portfolios who work there. During the customer interview, it turned out that the studio has plenty of visitors and since they have a solid social media presence, finding new clients is not an issue for the artists. Although handling the appointments is a problem, since every artist handles their own appointments on social media in direct messages, where those messages get lost and it’s time-consuming to make a booking and track appointments on both ends.

Due to the high demand for their services it can take weeks for a client to get a reply which could harm the client-artist relationship.

When talking about the project scope, we decided to do a 1 month long project where we integrate a booking system into a website we create for the shop.

Personas

The following user research resulted in two personas, which I put the focus on.

1. Timothée Lussier - Tattoo Artist, 30

Goal: Receive booking messages from potential clients with a potential date that fits their calendar.

Barrier: There’s no public calendar or available dates the client can choose from. Now they interact via direct messages and it feels overwhelming.

2. Camille Bozonnet - Marketing manager, 28

Goal: To book an appointment to have a tattoo.

Barrier: Doesn’t know how long the appointment will take, or which days are available.

The goal

The primary goal was to create a website on which booking an appointment is easy for clients. What was important is that only after the tattoo artist approved the request should it be confirmed for the client as a valid appointment.

Initial stages

I conducted user research and user interviews to create wireframes for iteration. The client gave me complete freedom of all the layouts. I wanted to create a minimal yet optimal flow. After a workshop, I and my team were ready to start the user testing period.

User testing

To evaluate the booking system on the website, I relied on usage metrics in conjunction with usability tests. This allowed me and my team to gain a deeper understanding by combining both qualitative and quantitative information. We used low-fidelity prototypes created in Figma.

User Interface

After the user testing evaluation, I created the finished UI to hand over for development. When I created the interface my aim was to create a minimal, cool but modern visual, to get the same feeling from the website that you get when walk into the studio as well.

During this project, I collaborated closely with stakeholders from the shop and development.

Google Calendar to the website’s scheduling system where they would mark their availability. Users who would like to make an appointment can first choose an artist based on their preference, choose a session type and book it on an available date provided previously.

Success and evolution

When introducing the system to Kink Kang Tattoo, it was highly welcomed. The website is in implementation and after QA testing, it will be released by the end of September. The goal is that within a year, 60% of the customers book appointments via the website.
