The Zmei (Змај) is a dragon, serpent, or sometimes a human-like character with dragon-like traits. It’s often depicted with multiple heads - 3, 6, 9, or 12.

Its name is derived from the words snake (змея/змија) and earth (земља). In addition to this, all-Slavic name for the dragon, other names can be found in local traditions of some areas.

In Serbian epic poetry, the Zmei is depicted as a protector, a surreal force that is a powerful ally in fights against the enemies.
