At the Fish Market

"At the Fish Market, Banda Aceh" 13" x 19"

This illustration was inspired by a poem I read earlier this year. The poem describes the feel, smell, and atmosphere of the men and women whose lives center around fishing markets, the ocean, and the precious resources it offers. The poem also reminded me of when I was a little kid. Where every now and then, my dad would wake me up at five in the morning on Saturdays to take me down to the local fish market in the Ventura harbor. Being a little one, I remember how fascinated I was by the different types of fish, shrimps, mollusks, and strange creatures the fisherman had caught. And After looking around and touching a handful of dead fish eyes, I was told to pick one I would take home. I always tried to pick one roughly my size as well.
