Tend patient app

Tend is a New Zealand startup reinventing full-service healthcare through superior technology and patient-centric experience design. They offer in-clinic care, online video consultations, ePrescriptions, and easy access to your doctor with appointment notes and live chat – all controlled through a delightful mobile app.

Tend approached me at the beginning of their product design journey to partner with their UX lead and create this mission-critical patient app experience.

Our challenges included: Working within existing regulations to turn the previously tedious enrollment paperwork into a human-friendly digital process. Building trust and education around new modes of healthcare, such as online appointments, to sell people on the efficiencies of a digital-first full-service system. And making the processes of appointment booking and video consultations as quick and easy as possible, delivering healthcare on the patient’s terms, not the doctor’s.

Through careful consultation, prototyping, and patient feedback, we generated an interface design system that not only satisfies the needs of the current app but provides the components and patterns necessary for Tend to iterate internally on their product design as their services grow more comprehensive.

The Tend app design won two Best Awards gold medals. The judges commented: "This disrupted an existing real-world behaviour, off a true latent need, by enabling easy access to health. Simplifying so many services for both patients and doctors. A customer centred, digital-first approach to the medical industry, potentially paving the way to health innovation."
