Women of Welcome: trip guides
Women of Welcome is an organization tackling the complexities of immigration from a Biblical lens believing that being a safe country and a compassionate country are not mutually exclusive ideals — even more, that care for immigrants is a Biblical mandate that Christians must wrestle with. One of the many resources they offer is trips to the border to meet with immigrants and border agents to gain more empathy and a better understanding of what the best path forward is.
To accompany these trips, the Women of Welcome team asked Dresden to design trip guides. The first (to be handed out at the beginning of the trip) contained important trip information as well as walked the traveler through pre-conceived ideas/biases about the issue of immigration and the people involved, and gave them a way to document their experiences. The second (to be handed out at the end of the trip) assisted the traveler in processing what they saw and learned, and helped equip them to convert their new knowledge to action and conversations in their own circles back home.
As with any design piece conveying information about a heavy or sensitive topic, the weight of intentionality hits harder than other pieces. From the photos chosen to the layout structure to which areas of content have more attention drawn to them, every detail matters.
