Ferabell

Overview

The aquatic world is one left unexplored by many, it’s hidden beauties and mysterious forms remain unseen, and unrecognised. These beautiful brought rise to Ferabell.

Ferabell is an electronic garment that puts these exquisite natural properties on display. The stunning performance of bioluminescent jellyfish, and the elegant appearance of reef corals. These two key ideas make up Ferabell’s identity.

Design

A lot of consideration went into the overall appearance and layout of the garment. The garment needed to be elegant in appearance, yet complex enough to illuminate effectively.

For these reasons, we took inspiration from the simple, yet beautiful appearance of ‘bubble green seaweed’. Ferabell only captures a glimpse of the hidden elegance and beauty that the aquatic world has to offer.

Production

Ferabell uses LED illumination to recreate the delicate bio-luminescent display produced by certain species of jellyfish. The lighting is controlled using a microcontroller, programmed to display different illumination effects.

Outcome

Both Aylin and I are very happy with final garment. The initial concepts translated very well into production, and through to final presentation.

Special Thanks

I would like to thank my excellent partner, Aylin Trautter, for her help in both designing and constructing the garment, Tayla East for being a fantastic model for both the filming and photography, and Audionautix for providing the audio.
