Hanafuda (花札, “flower cards”)

In celebration of spring, our May monthly animation features artwork from the Japanese card game, Hanafuda (花札, “flower cards”). 🌺🌸🌼

Created in the 1800s, the 48 card deck has 12 suits that represent the months of the year. Each suit is designated by a flower and has four cards.

Featured in this animation are:

The "Crane and Sun" card from the "Pine" suit represents the month of January.

The "Cherry blossom" "curtain" card represents March.

The "Full moon" card is from the Susuki grass suit and represents August.

The "Chinese phoenix" card is from the "Paulownia" suit and represents the month of December".
