What is the value of nature?

An illustration about calculating the value of nature.

This artwork accompanied an article in issue 209 of Resources magazine about how economists calculate the value of nature. This complex process results in conceptual ‘black boxes’, as the public struggles to understand how the results were reached. The illustration conveys the relationship between finance and nature, but uses the piggy bank as a means to obscure the process of the coin turning into flowering plants.
