How about placing the dashboard menus at top rather than left? The reason behind placing drawer at the left side is expandability. Any sub-menu under main menu will not take any horizontal place.
BUT if the menus are single, i.e don't contain any sub menu, then the top navigation bar is useful too. Why? because human eye SCAN from left to right first then top to bottom. So, it's basically needs equal amounts if cognitive load which is needed to scan left-sided navigation drawer.
Here I tried to challenge conventional layout for that reason and given wide space for items that matter.
