Spotify Canvas Creator

We recently launched a tool to allow musicians to create stunning, impactful Spotify Canvases with Rotor.

If you're wondering, a canvas is short, looping video that plays on screen when you stream music on Spotify on your phone.

Not only can canvas videos help reinforce an artist's brand and allow them to be creative, they can also expand their fanbase and listens. Spotify released data that showed tracks with canvases got 120% more streams, 145% more shares and 114% more saves to playlists. It only takes a few minutes to make a canvas in Rotor, so it feels well-worth the effort.

I designed the canvas creator as a 3 step journey — add a clip, choose a visual style and select a looping mode, with defaults in place to get users to download as quickly as possible. Users will see a real-time video preview as they flick through the various editing options.

We're big fans of FullStory at Rotor since it allows us to track customer behaviour and the impact of our design decisions. We've seen a very healthy conversion rate since the feature was launched in November 2021 — 45% of users who use the Canvas Creator on desktop buy their video. The mobile conversion rate is currently sitting at 15%, so I'm looking at ways to improve the mobile flow and I have some design tweaks ready for development — we gotta keep iterating! 😃
