Kinetic systems and behaviour project

The purpose of this project was to explore kinetic systems and behaviour to interact with sensors of our choice. Inspired by the natural kinetic movement of the coral reef and "Chasing Coral", a Netflix documentary, we created "Coral." A bleached coral model to raise awareness of the crisis of coral bleaching. There are 2 parts of the project and it demonstrates our design thinking process.

Before we printed all the coral branches, we decided to reuse the “flaming sea wave” wooden box from Phase 1 as a base and painted all the branches white to mimic the bleaching.

We used a plastic 3D printed model to disrupt the purity of the idea with the man-made organic shapes, attempting to re-create the last breath of the coral when the ocean is flaming. We alsocombined both synthetic material and material that could be found in nature to highlight the conflict between man and nature.Is it ironic? After all, our “3D print bleached coral” and coral bleaching are both created by humans.
