Pono <3 Spam
For Pono co-founders Lauren and Paul, both Japanese-Americans with families from Hawaii, Spam is more than a can of processed meat; it’s part of their culture. First produced in 1937 with a rise in popularity during WWII, what started as a practical meal for GI’s evolved into a key ingredient in many Hawaiian dishes (and in many other cultures dishes). Spam musubi, a classic favorite, was created by Barbara Funamura, a Japanese-American woman from Hawaii.
