My pal and All Around Nice Guy, Stewart Scott-Curran, wrote a real cool lil essay titled, "What Eighties Thrash Metal Taught Me About Creativity." It could be summed up with, "What Would Slayer Do?" which I can really get down with. I definitely recommend giving his post a read.
