Stories vs Narratives
While the word story is often used interchangeably with narrative.
They are not the same thing.
Story is the content of a narrative (what is told).
Narrative is an expression (how it is told).
Strictly speaking, we only see the story through narrative and thus it is the narrative that determines our perception of story.
So it goes.
