NBA-ABA Merger

In 1976, the fledging American Basketball Association (ABA) merged with the more established National Basketball Association (NBA). As a result, the Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, New York Nets (now Brooklyn) and San Antonio Spurs joined the NBA beginning with the 1976-77 season. The ABA has been credited with many innovations in the modern game of basketball, however, its signature red, white and blue ball remains its most notable memory.
