Graphcore Quadtree Generator

Work completed at Pentagram.

I had built a pattern generator for Graphcore, a machine learning hardware startup. It starts by creating a Quadtree style grid, by subdividing boxes, then the shapes are dropped in. The algorithm was random but weighted so it produces pockets of pattern, which in our early tests was much more likely to produce beautiful patterns,

At the time, I used a beta version of Electron which allowed me to write PDFs to the clipboard, meaning I could paste the vector pattern directly into Illustrator for use in designs (for example the cycle jersey). It was an interesting experiment in generative branding tools that a designer can use as part of their process.
