Inspired by Square Kufic, I designed MIMICA to follow only one strict rule: absolute evenness of full and empty spaces. Square Kufic is an interesting precursor to pixel art, although it was originally made up of alternating glazed tiles and plain bricks to create geometric patterns over the surface of a wall. In a Square Kufic text each word can face in a different direction. Every horizontal and vertical in the grid is a potential baseline. MIMICA represents the characters of the Roman alphabet to evoke the Square Kufic, the simplest of all Arabic writing systems.
