Hurricane Buddy App
Shortly before Hurricane Ida hit Louisiana, I posted a Daily UI challenge of a Hurricane calendar. I got a lot of really helpful feedback from fellow UX designers and I decided to redo and expand my design.
Unfortunately, a few hours after my post, we lost electricity and the storm started. Throughout my time with no electricity, cell service, or internet connection, I reflected on what us Louisianians struggle with during a hurricane. We not only struggle with destruction of our homes, flooding, and no power, but we have to contribute a lot of time to prepping for the hurricane. Some board up their windows, put sand bags in front of their doors, set up a generator to power the lights, refrigerator, and freezer (cannot power AC), and move all our belonging from off the floor. Others plan to evacuate and leave the area. They choose what items mean the most to them, pack them up, and drive away, not knowing what they'll come home to. Lets not get started on gas... We are experiencing a gas shortage right now and people have been waiting in 3+ hour lines to fill their cars up and bring gas home for their generators. Grocery stores are swiped almost empty of food that does not need to be cooked. To say the least, the people affected by Hurricane Ida are suffering.
I am so grateful to say that my electricity is back on after 5 days and I could finally get back to designing! During the storm, I sketched new screens and thought of an app idea called Hurricane Buddy. Hurricane Buddy is an all-in-one hurricane app. The app includes blog style resources for people who are either staying home or evacuating and each section includes resources for preparing for the hurricane, during the hurricane, and the history of hurricanes. The app also offers a some live trackers including a hurricane tracker, a power outage tracker, gas stations with available gas tracker, and an evacuation route traffic tracker.
