This is the first time in my 20 something years of writing software that I did a year long beta and I have to say that it was the best thing since sliced bread. Not only it helps shaping up the product and flushing out most obscure and esoteric bugs, but it also helps immensely with motivation. When you have real people using what you wrote in real life, while you are still working on it, it is incredibly encouraging. So if you are ever in a position of working alone, just make damn sure to get an audience. It helps getting things done like nothing else.
