Pantau Gambut Food Estate Watch
We're excited to announce our microsite with Pantau Gambut on the Food Estate Watch is now live!
In response to the threat of food shortages related to drought and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, President Joko Widodo launched the food estate program, a new strategic program for Indonesia. The food estate program includes developing hundreds of thousands of hectares of new rice fields, which can damage peatland and protected forests.
This program has produced some divided opinions amongst the public, and there has been similar programs in the past with problems and negative impacts that needs to be taken into account so they're not repeated -- negative impacts on peatland amongst them.
The team at Pantau Gambut has always been passionate in delivering information and encouraging the public to remain vigilant and critical to hold stakeholders accountable for their programs, which makes this site important to consolidate educative information, expand on topics, and share relevant updates for the public. Let's all take a more active role and continue to observe the implementation of the food estate program regularly for the improvement of our society while preserving the safety of our environment.
