The Ancient Greeks

The Ancient Greeks believed that Oregano was the herb of Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, who is said to have created it as the herb of joy for her garden.

Similarly, they used Bay Leaves as a symbol of protection and victory. Only Apollo, the God of Healing, and the victors in the Delphic Games were permitted to wear crowns of bay. A tradition that continues in modern day Olympic Games.

In Greek, the word Chamomile means apple of the ground, so called for its fresh apple scent and its low-growing nature. Hippocrates was the first to mention chamomile and recommended it for purification, protection and also to fight colds.
