WHO WAS MOTHER SMARA?

by IOANA PELEHATĂI, Illustrated by me
An editorial about an little-known character, Mother Smara .
"An austere figure, with a monastic air, but also one of the first feminists in the country. Minor poet, but friend of Mihai Eminescu and Veronica Micle. He put his shoulder to the reform of Romanian education and traveled through Europe, at a time when women were just beginning to demand their rights. From a family of landowners, but progressive and pacifist. A character tolerated under the communist regime, both for her visions of the left, but also for the nationalist vein that runs through her writings.
