Jelly Belly Banner Ad

I was recently made aware that I had done very minimal banner design. Being one of the most common and popular forms of digital marketing there is, I decided it would be beneficial to test my skills on a banner ad.

A few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I had gotten some Jelly Belly's and were messing around deciding which ones we liked and which we didn't. Turns out there is a game Jelly Belly created called Bean Boozled where they have 2 jelly beans that look identical but one tastes great, the other awful. I thought this was a great idea and I have never seen it marketed in-store or digitally before, yet the creative opportunities are endless for a project like this.

So, my goal became to create a creative and thought-provoking banner ad that grabbed a viewer's attention quickly and pulled them in by their curiosity.

My solution to this was to create simple and clean ads that had a direct and clear message. The ads tempt a viewer to decide if they are brave enough to risk eating a bad-tasting jelly bean. I wanted to make the short sayings very direct and over-the-top serious to add humor to the piece because it's a bad-tasting jelly bean not a matter of life and death. As for the visual aspects of the ad, I chose to use the exact same image of a jelly bean for both flavors, showing that no one can tell the difference between the two no matter how hard you look. Finally, I added a box to visually frame each banner that coincided with the colour of the Jelly Belly's pictured.

I think this ad is quite humorous and am glad to see my idea worked well. I would love to see Jelly Belly try something like this for real one day.

I am in no way associated with Jelly Belly and do not own the photos used.
