International Women’s Day

Happy to be a part of Tillanelli X Yandex Q collaboration. From March, 1st and till the International Women’s Day female artists were answering different questions about the celebration of women’s solidarity and dignity.

My question is about the origin of the tradition of giving mimosa flowers on the International Women’s Day. Just like many other beautiful and meaningful things, this tradition began in Rome in 1946 with the instigation of Rita Motagni and Teresa Mattei, Italian women activists. They suggested that women should give each other mimosa as a sign of mutual respect and support. They chose this flower not only because of its affordability – there is also a strong symbolism behind it. Mimosa may look fragile, but this shrub is resistant to harsh conditions. Just like us! Happy Girl Power Day!
