Bon Iver Poster

Bon Iver poster design exploration, 2018.

This project was inspired by an interview I read with Justin Vernon, talking about his creative process in making my favorite album 22, a million.

Firstly they use a lot of samples and bits, that are completely unrecognisable, from other songs to compose their own songs. I did the same by “sampling” famous album covers by taking one letter out of each one and spelling out the sentence “It might be over soon,” words that echo throughout the album’s first song.

For the distortions on some of the tracks, a very distinctive feature on the album, Justin Vernon and his engineer took a cassette, pulled the tape out, crumpled it and wrote on it with a marker and then recorded over it.

I composed the letters with the simplified album artwork on a poster and printed it, crumpled the poster, painted on it and then scanned it in and then applied the type.
