Illustrated Movie Poster | Novena

Commission for stylized movie poster for short film Novena to be featured at 2020 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, San Diego International Film Festival, and San Diego Asian Film Festival.

With the core of the film involving the experiences of a Filipino-American family, I wanted to incorporate the bold primary colors and meaning behind the flag of the Philippines. After initial drafts, the client requested a more subdued color palette more reminiscent of dusk and the film's color grading. The shading and clouds were also added in to tie back to the overall feel of the scenes. I made the siblings in the characters' likeness on Procreate and compiled the poster design and festival seals on Adobe InDesign.

"Novena explores the lives of a Filipino-American family in a crisis of faith through the eldest daughter Teresa, who is caught in the middle of her responsibilities to family and moving forward into adulthood. The film deals with the cultural specificity of Filipino religious grieving customs and is about familial intimacy, and how these relationships can be at times imperfect but not irreparable."
