I hate to admit it, but growth is painful.

I guess that's why not many people bother developing their character. I don't want to lie to you. It's a bumpy road. You'll have to accept your downfalls and come to terms with the truth. You'll gain a lot of awareness that will smack you in the face, but you'll learn so much along the way that you'll be happy you did.
