Typing in VR isn’t the most enjoyable experience. There are two main methods for VR keyboards, one is ray-casting used in many apps including Oculus, which requires to point to the keys/ letters and then pressing the triggers. The other one which you can call drumsticks is hitting the keys with a graphical stick, attached to your virtual hand/ controllers. Neither of those provided an accurate, fast and easy to use experience. ( I will provide the results of the questionnaire that I used in the research phase, in form of a case study, soon)
Here’s my concept for a split keyboard. You can still use it in any of previous methods, tapping or pointing but if you press and hold both grab buttons at the same time and rotate your wrist, exactly like when you want to break a piece of wood, you’ll have half keyboards attached to your controllers. Then you could easily and accurately move through keys using joysticks and pressing the trigger buttons to insert letters.
To demonstrate my concept I used this amazing VR app called #Tvori which is a VR prototyping/ animation tool on steam.
Let me know what is your VR typing experience, and what do you think about this concept?
Thanks
