THE HISTORY OF RECYCLING

America has moved past its roots as a culture that values material goods and has become a throw-away society. During this transition, the recycling industry was viewed as the savior for our growing waste problems, shrouding the core issues of overconsumption, unsustainable
packaging, and the lack of a capable infrastructure. The truth is that recycling, while it remains relevant to waste management, is not enough to save our environment.

Based on this idea, I completed a project in response to a school research assignment. The objective of the project was to tell our truth through data visualization. My goal was to combat the consumeristic, throw-away mentality, and its associated environmental issues. I decided to inform others about the history of recycling in America to achieve this goal.

My resulting design compiles my research into a timeline showing the progression of recycling throughout America's history. I posted the infographic on Instagram to achieve maximum exposure, but it would also be appropriate in a brochure format.
