✏️ Tâibûn ê Ângpao, Formosan Red Envelopes in Lunar New Year
2021 is Ox Year 🐂. Diligence, fidelity, and helpful livestock that is a compatible assistant for ancient Formosan agriculture. Due to the contribution of the ox, Formosan farmers have taboo to eat beef. Unlike Indian people who worship ox, Formosan people regard ox as a friend. Local news often reports old farmers to stay with their oxen near the end of life.
🎉 Sinnî Khuàilo̍k & Kionghí Huattsâi
Sinnî Khuàilo̍k, which means “Happy(Khuàilo̍k) New(Sin) Year(nî)”. Formosan people say this sentence to each other in Lunar New Year. Besides, children know if they want to get ângpau(lucky money), they have to say “Kionghí Huattsâi” when they meet elders.
“Kionghí Huattsâi”, which means “Wish you good luck for a prosperous future”, or more secular → Wish you rich!
🎉 Asian Zodiac
Asian Zodiac has 12 animals and the Ox is the second one. Many countries share this culture in the Far East. Most people know these animals in Formosan Zodiac, like rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. And also, Korea, Singapore, Cambodia, and China share the same characters. On the other hand, Japanese Zodiac has “Boar”, Vietnamese Zodiac has “Buffalo” and “Cat”, Thai Zodiac owns “Naga” and there are only 8 animals in Burmese Zodiac.
