HISTORY OF THE BALL DROP IN TIMES SQUARE:
• FIREWORKS - To celebrate the opening of their new headquarters, The New York Times newspaper had a midnight fireworks show on the roof of the building at midnight on December 31, 1903.
• FIRST BALL DROP - In 1907, the name of Longacre Square was officially changed to Times Square. To celebrate this AND to make a bigger New Year's Eve spectacle, Adolph Ochs (owner of the New York Times) hired an electrician to make a lighted ball that would be lowered on a flag pole!
• 6 BALLS - The first ball was only 5 feet in diameter and was used until 1919. Today's ball debuted for New Year's Eve 2009. It is a whopping 12 feet in diameter and weigs 11,875 pounds. It stands 475 feet above the street, has 32,256 LED lamps, and contains 2,688 Waterford crystals.
