National Fruitcake Day - December 27

Happy #NationalFruitcakeDay! Raise your hand if you are a fan of fruitcake? Below are a few fun facts about this polarizing dessert!

FUN FACTS ABOUT FRUITCAKE:

• BEEN AROUND FOR AGES - Fruitcake has the reputation of lasting forever! But did you know that the oldest reference found regarding a fruitcake dates back to Roman times?!? Perhaps all roads lead to Rome for easy access and distribution of their fruitcake!!!

• FRUITCAKE IS NOT FIGGY PUDDING - As you sing "Now bring us some figgy pudding" you are NOT singing about fruitcake! Figgy Pudding (also known as Christmas Pudding in the UK) is similar to American Fruitcake in that it is chock full of dried fruits. But American Fruitcake can is meant to be cut and served cold. One of the trademarks of Figgy Pudding is that it is steamed and served hot. With this in mind, it looks like I illustrated the wrong holiday treat. LOL!

• FRUITCAKE IN OUTER SPACE - Did you know that there was a pineapple fruitcake on board during the Apollo 11 space mission. Because it was not consumed by Neil Armstong or Buzz Aldrin during their epic mission to the moon, the fruitcake returned to earth. The fruitcake is currently on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
