"Animating Question" | Procreate Icon Redesign

The "Animating Question" letter mark builds on the drive in all artists to explore, interrogate, and express.

The major creative constraints I placed on myself were largely inspired by the existing log and icon:

1. Retain the same color scheme: An icon designed to be recognizable by its rainbow palette is a core hallmark of the existing brand that get's carried over in this treatment.

2. Pay respect to the letterform-play of the original: The "Question" concept carries over the subtle P-curve in the icon but captures the top of the letter more boldly. The melding of the "P" and "?" became the front-running idea early in the process.

Goals of the project were inspired by the prompt to have "design fun":

1. Color outside the lines: Instead of limiting the canvas to the classic iOS "squircle", I used the proportions of macOS Big Sur icons - with the rainbow band escaping the square constraints. (That said, since Procreate is an iOS app, inset versions have been included),

2. Animate! The title of this submission references how exploration animates artists and it seemed right to use this prompt as my first foray into Procreate-enabled animation.

Although I had worked on small hand-drawn animations, this might be the most of it that I've done in a single project and my first time doing it all digitally on the iPad. Every bit of design and animation is done with good old frame-by-frame painting in Procreate. Animation Assist for the win! Also look out for the new effects like Halftone and Chromatic Aberration.

I spent about 3 days on this competition-inspired side project. Thoughts welcome.
