The folk of the title are ferocious fairy folk that Corinna keeps at bay with candles, food, salt, and spells. When she is taken to the coast, other aspects of her strange powers come to light.

This book is criminally underrated. I suspect no one knew how to market it, because it doesn’t quite fit in any category. Billingsley’s writing is spare and straight to the bone, making for a tiny novel that looks like a middle grade book, yet is haunting and dark and fierce. You have to have some grasp of the mythology of the British Isles to fully appreciate what the author has done here. It’s so worth the effort though. If you like Arya-type characters but don’t feel the need for 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘦 so much gore, or to wade through reams of pages, it’s a must-read.
