Tokyo Olympics 2020 Mascot Design

Olympics Mascot Profile

Creative Idea:
- Japanese transforming raccoon (化け狸) using the basic shape of Tokyo Sky Tree, a metropolitan symbol.
- This animal spirit is chosen because it is well-known globally through folklore and media. It also symbolizes change and celebration, due to its pure mischievousness and its ability to transform.
- Used the physical structure and literal element of “Sky Tree” to make this mascot look like both a tower and a tree. From the bottom, it has the shape of a triangle, from the top, it is circular.
- The adaptation of both tree and tower shows harmony between technology and nature, which is one of the best charms of Tokyo.
- Its arms symbolize Tokyo’s night sky. The rope (しめ縄) looking wrist are neon lights using the color of olympic rings, further emphasizing urban night view. Its legs symbolize city lights using warm color seen from above.
- Colored using a color palette of traditional Japanese colors.

Character Features:
- This mascot is an avid tool maker! Despite being able to magically transform to anything it wants, this mascot prefers to think up an idea and manually make tools to solve its problems.
- The tower-looking hat is actually a high-tech antenna it made by itself to further enjoy parties. The antenna can transmit different kinds of signals, sounds, and images. The design is taken from a traditional hat (かんむり) and from Tokyo Sky Tree’s chamber, symbolizing Japan’s metropolitan aspects.
- Although it is also an airhead, it is very cheerful and loves to liven up events and celebrations.
