Blueprint 2020 Dynamic Design System
This year our annual blueprint event is distributed and digital, so I created a design system that would be self service resource in Figma, complete with:
Componentized slide templates, allowing for control of slide content without downloading the fonts for the event brand.
Posters for promotion of the event to invitees, along with a branded zoom background generator.
An event timeline image generator that simulates how an event will look on our live website timeline, with the ability to upload images (in this context, can we imagine content management as filling out a form?), as well as tools for the user to export the images needed for our web team.
A dynamic 6 timezone calendar that visualizes all of our events on the timeline in different parts of the world to plan around our audience and make sure that our event times come at somewhat reasonable hours.
All of this branded in 80s science fiction book aesthetic of course.
This system is highly complex and makes the most out of figma's dynamic page links and components to help our team be self-sufficient and plan a large scale event with less than 10 organizers and designers behind the scenes.
Creating a navigation UI inside of the document means that this document can be duplicated by the team and used as a tool aid to level up their content for the event, even if they're new to Figma. I also link to pre-recorded tutorial videos on how to use each tool right inside the document!
In the coming weeks, I'll be creating videos on how you can build tools like this in Figma in a new collaborative design channel we've been working on at IDEO CoLab. I'm also planning the release of the digital event scheduler as a Figma community file on my community profile as soon as I fix its many bugs.
